Aviation and Aerospace Operations: A Sector Guide
Aviation and aerospace operations is the sector that runs the flying: airlines, charter and cargo operators, FBOs, ground handling, flight departments, and the logistics networks underneath them. If manufacturing and MRO build and maintain aircraft, operations is where they earn their keep.
The sector's workforce is broad. It includes aircraft dispatchers and schedulers, ramp agents and line service technicians, station and operations managers, logistics coordinators, and the safety and quality staff who keep programs compliant. Leadership roles sit on top, from shift supervisors to directors of operations.
Two features shape the work. First, it runs around the clock: nights, weekends, and holidays are part of the job, and staffing models have to account for them. Second, it is unforgiving of error: on-time performance, safety reporting, and regulatory compliance are measured constantly, and the people who do well treat checklists and procedures as tools, not obstacles.
Hiring in the sector rewards employers who are realistic and fast. Candidates with aviation operations experience are usually employed, and they move for better schedules, better pay, or better leadership, in roughly that order. A slow hiring process loses them.
Employers also feel the pinch of seasonality. Summer peaks and contract wins create sudden demand for ramp, dispatch, and logistics staff, while fixed overheads make permanent hires hard to justify. Contract and temp-to-hire staffing is a natural fit for that rhythm.
