MRO and Aviation Services: Keeping Fleets Flying
MRO, maintenance, repair, and overhaul, is the part of aviation that keeps aircraft flying. Repair stations, airline maintenance organizations, and component shops inspect, service, repair, and overhaul airframes, engines, avionics, and accessories. It is a documentation-driven business governed by regulation, including the Federal Aviation Regulations, and by each customer's approval of the work being performed.
The workforce at the center of it is the A&P mechanic, a technician certified by the FAA as an airframe and powerplant mechanic. Around them work avionics technicians, structural repair technicians, non-destructive inspection specialists, interior technicians, and quality inspectors. Together they take aircraft through scheduled checks, repairs, modifications, and overhauls.
The defining feature of MRO work is traceability. Every task is written into a work order, every part must have documented origin, and every sign-off matters. People who thrive in the environment are as disciplined with paperwork as they are with a torque wrench.
The sector's biggest hiring pressure is demographic: certified, experienced mechanics are retiring faster than new ones are being certified, and A&P school enrollment has not kept pace with demand from airlines and repair stations. For employers, that means the people they need are rarely on the open market for long, and proactive recruiting beats waiting for applications.
MRO staffing also has a rhythm. Checks and overhaul lines run on schedules, but unscheduled maintenance and AOG, aircraft on ground, situations create sudden, urgent demand. Employers need partners who can present qualified, credentialed people quickly, sometimes within days.
